Anne Sofie Madsen – Denmark’s new international shooting star presented a strong, innovative and playful collection at today’s show in Copenhagen’s old town hall.  A graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2009, Anne Sofie Madsen is staying true to her artistic roots in her Spring/Summer 2014 collection, where she experiments with materials such as leather applied to a fine mesh base, built-up collars with unconventional patterns, and hand-drawn illustrations printed digitally on silk or wool fabrics. The consistent play with contrasts and materials creates a look of mixed toughness and fragility to each design. And seeing yet another strong collection from the designer, who has been going from strength to strength since her debut show during London Fashion Week in 2010, it is no wonder why she was handpicked by John Galliano for Dior in Paris, before moving to London to work for Alexander McQueen as Junior Designer.

In her Spring/Summer 2014 collection Anne Sofie Madsen keeps her vision consistent which she describes as a “wish to show the well-known through the un-known and to use traditional handcraft methods and couture techniques within ready-to-wear”. The collection — that is in all black and white with big beautiful print patterns and metal accessories — is both playful, avant-garde and unconventional at the same time: Who would have thought that a nineties high cut white tanga brief could work as a fun contrast to a pair of low cut sheer white trousers? Ann Sofie Madsen shows that she is not a slave of conventional fashion design, but plays with form, shapes, patterns and underwear as outerwear. And with references to Asian art and white futurism Anne Sofie Madsen demonstrates that she truly knows how to mix leather, metals and printed fabrics into a true fashion art form. We cannot wait to see her next collection!
